Naalya Secondary Schools Join the 2026 Parliamentary Malaria Walk
On July 26, 2026, Naalya Secondary Schools representing our Namugongo, Bweyogerere, and Lugazi campuses proudly participated in the 4th Parliamentary Malaria Walk, a national initiative dedicated to the fight against malaria with the goal of eliminating the disease by 2030.
This year's walk, held under the theme “Walk the Talk: End Malaria in Schools Now,” focused on protecting learners and highlighted the devastating impact of malaria on school attendance, academic performance, and overall child wellbeing. Thousands of Ugandan learners miss classes daily due to malaria, disrupting education and limiting children's ability to reach their full potential.
The event was graced by Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth, Speaker of Parliament, who served as the Chief Walker. He was represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, who led the walk as the chief walker. He was escorted by a number of Ministers, including the current Government Chief Whip and former Minister for Health, Hon. Jane Ruth Aceng.
In his address, Deputy Speaker Tayebwa issued a powerful call to action: he urged for the installation of minimum testing laboratories in school sick bays and dispensaries as a first-line check for malaria. He emphasized that these basic laboratories would help detect malaria early and prevent deaths, particularly in light of recent tragic incidents in schools. He reaffirmed Parliament's unwavering commitment to the fight against malaria through continued budgetary support and advocacy.
The walk commenced at the Parliament of Uganda and proceeded through the streets of Kampala, drawing participants from government ministries, schools, universities, the private sector, civil society, and thousands of Ugandans united in the fight against malaria.
As Naalya Secondary Schools, We are immensely proud of our students and staff for standing in solidarity with the nation in this critical cause. Malaria remains one of Uganda's leading causes of illness, accounting for approximately 30-40% of outpatient visits and remaining a major economic burden on families. Our participation underscores our commitment not only to academic excellence but also to the health and wellbeing of our learners and the broader community.
Together, let us walk the talk and end malaria in our schools and communities.
